Xiamen’s First Community-Based Networked Library Opens in Xiang’an, Powered by RFID Technology

10/02/2023

On the morning of December 4, 2022, as the red curtain slowly fell, the much-anticipated project—the city’s first community networked library, Xiang’an District Library’s “Xueyuan Neighborhood Reading Room”—was officially unveiled and opened to the public.

The reading room was jointly established by Xiamen International Trade Real Estate Co., Ltd., Xiang’an District Library, and Xiamen Xindeco IoT Technology Co., Ltd. (“Xindeco IoT”). Its launch not only allows local residents to conveniently borrow and return books close to home, meeting daily cultural needs and accessing high-quality resources, but also integrates the neighborhood reading room into the Xiang’an District Library system as a branch and grassroots service point. Through the city-wide library network, readers can enjoy interlibrary loan and return services across Xiamen’s public libraries.

These convenient services are made possible with the support of RFID technology provided by Xindeco IoT. By applying RFID to library management, the system enables seamless citywide borrowing and returning within the community while significantly simplifying management operations. Every book in the reading room is tagged with an RFID electronic label, complemented by RFID security gates, self-service self-service kiosks, book drop boxes, and OPAC search terminals. After entering through the RFID gates, readers can easily search for library collections, and with a library card or Xiamen Citizen Card, complete borrowing or returning within seconds.

The “Xueyuan Neighborhood Reading Room” adopts a community-district model, engaging nearby schools and institutions to integrate social resources and provide shared services for residents. Upholding its customer-centric philosophy and commitment to continuous value creation, Xindeco IoT will continue to deliver reliable and high-quality services for the reading room. Together, these efforts contribute to building a “City of Books” in Xiamen and Xiang’an, enriching cultural life and enhancing the city’s image and overall quality of life.
